Kylie West is joining the festival for the first time this year, opening the gates of her garden, Villa Verde, to the public. In this Q&A with Virginia Winder, Kylie reveals what inspired her to take part, what she’s most looking forward to sharing, and how preparations have been shaping up ahead of the big weekend. From thriving orchards to surprise tasks, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at her journey.
What made you decide this was the year to open your garden to the public?
I always said that I might open it once to see what it was like. During last year’s festival I walked around my garden and thought I might open it next year, so took photos and sent them in.
How are you feeling as the festival approaches?
I feel fine – just hoping for fine weather.
What part of your garden are you most excited to share with visitors?
I think my orchard and vegetable gardens are pretty cool.
Have you visited many festival gardens in the past – and did any inspire you?
Yes, I am a regular festival goer and go most years.
What has surprised you most about preparing for your first festival?
I think I am finished with what I want done, but then I am always coming up with something else to do!
What would you like people to feel or experience when they walk through your garden?
I hope they just enjoy walking around and maybe getting ideas for what they can do with their own garden.
