Q&A with Janet and John King from Tītoki garden

Tītoki Garden is a peaceful oasis that Janet and John King have lovingly nurtured over the years. This year marks their first time opening the garden to the public as part of the Centuria Taranaki Garden Festival, and the couple is excited to share their hidden gem. Virginia Winder caught up with them to find out what inspired them to take the plunge, what visitors can expect, and how the journey to opening day has unfolded.

What made you decide this was the year to open your garden to the public?

We received positive feedback after a couple of groups viewed our garden last year. Our neighbours, Steph and Brent, organised for us to meet with Jessica Parker, who encouraged us all to participate in this year’s festival.

How are you feeling as the festival approaches?

Excited but a bit anxious. It is all new to us and we do want to enjoy the 10-day festival.

What part of your garden are you most excited to share with visitors?

The lower lawn and garden that backs onto beautiful native bush is always a great spot, even during the winter months.

Have you visited many festival gardens in the past – and did any inspire you?

Yes, we have enjoyed visiting lots of gardens over the years and always take away an idea or two to use at our place.

What has surprised you most about preparing for your first festival?

The friendly team behind the festival and the approachable gardeners involved. The list of ‘to-do’ jobs in the garden that we had put off over the years and are now completing!

What would you like people to feel or experience when they walk through your garden?

The peace and quiet of a city garden that is hidden down a suburban driveway.
